Kerli

This week has found me lost in the steely embrace of Euro-electro-pop (as opposed to last week's Folky frolic.)

In my electropades I came across Estonian nymph-fatale, Kerli. With her origins in a small village of Soviet occupation, Kerli began competing in song contests at the age of 14. The still tender young thing (who is now only 21) debuted her her album, Love is Dead, this Summer.

Her track, Walking on Air, is worth checking out for the opening notes that haunt and creep like a decomposing music box playing from a dark and dusty attic. It was this sinister quality that held me, even through the major-sonority of the chorus. The lyrics aren't terribly noteworthy but they are quite satisfactory for fitting with the mood of the song. (The word "creepy" beginning almost every sentence until its pronunciation establishes a rhythm of it's own.)

Of course the dark feel of her music is tied to a somewhat superfluous dark Lolita persona, which I could take or leave, but it seems to work for her. All in all, I find her sound brainlessly captivating...but captivating, nonetheless. After all sometimes it's nice just to have some ear-candy.
