Most artists or creative-types (guilty, here!) have a certain band or artist they continually pull out for those moments when they aspire to create something, work through something, delve into something, or realize something. Who knows what makes a particular artist or album appeal to someone trying to create, but something about hearing that music opens ideas, feelings, and concepts so that creation can take place. For me, this artist is Podington Bear.
Always upbeat, Podington Bear electronic tracks are straightforward and well-developed. While the overall texture is so clean that it might come across as simplistic, there's no mistaking the lush and thoughtful layering and intricate musical development on each and every track. The tracks also have an infectious energy that swells up inside like watching a sunrise from the top of a mountain.
The story of Podington Bear unfolds like a PR wishlist. In 2008 the artist known as Podington Bear wrapped up an 18 month songwriting marathon – during which he endeavored to write, record, and release a song every other weekday. After 18 months - and a lot of deadlines - he had released 156 tracks via his blog and podcast. During this time of mad-production, Podington Bear’s actual identity remained a mystery, despite short interviews appearing on www.wired.com and inThe Globe & Mail. Finally in July of 2008 the shroud was lifted and Portland-based record label proprietor, visual artist, and musician, Chad Crouch stepped forward as the man behind the music.
Thankfully, Podington Bear’s days of producing music didn’t end with the culmination of his self-imposed production challenge. He is still releasing one song a week for free via his blog and podcast. I, for one, am glad for fresh material to soundtrack my stints at creativity.
